Will your next car be a smartphone? – CNN

From google news feed on October 19, 2010
Categories: Admin Updates, Smartphone news

Car 'infotainment' systems, like this one in a Volkswagen EOS, are putting smartphone-like abilities into the dashboard.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • More auto companies are building smartphone-like systems right into their cars
  • Ford's Sync, MyFord Touch systems allow texting, phone calls through voice or touchscreen
  • GM says future of its OnStar systems may include a Facebook app
  • Safety experts say it's not yet clear how distracting new systems could be

Editor's Note: This story is part of Our Mobile Lives[1], a weeklong CNN.com series about smartphones and their impact on our lifestyles and culture.

(CNN) -- Forget about using your smartphone in the car. Your next car might be one.

A growing number of auto and electronic companies are creating systems that put touchscreens, and the ability to talk and text, right into the dashboard.

In the near future, a significant percentage of new cars on the road are expected to come equipped with the ability to update Facebook statuses by voice and even surf the Web from the driver's seat.

Ford, General Motors and several other automakers are pitching the systems as a safer and easier way to let drivers do what many of them are already doing -- using their smartphones while driving.

"We saw this trend of mobile devices increasing, and we said this is an area where we can offer the customers a safer way to use those in the car," said Ford spokesman Alan Hall.

Safety experts aren't completely convinced, though. Some say that while hands-free devices remove part of the danger from using phones while driving, it remains to be seen how such devices are going to be used.

This is part of our weeklong series about how smartphones are changing our culture.

Monday: Americans are increasingly obsessed with their smartphones, which are rarely out of arm's reach at almost all times.

Tuesday: Phones with GPS maps and other apps have created a new form of distracted driving for motorists.

Wednesday: Ten things smartphones can do for us because they know where we are.

Thursday: How smartphones can make it harder, or easier, to drop off the grid.

Friday: Our Top 10 pet peeves about annoying smartphone users.

"There's still a lot we don't know about how these 'infotainment' systems are going to affect how people drive," said Russ Rader, spokesman for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety[2]. "We still don't know how drivers are going to integrate these systems into their driving environment."

Ford has been a leader in the field with its Sync and MyFord Touch systems, in which phones, MP3 players, radio and navigation tools all can be controlled by voice or by using an in-dash LCD screen.

MyFord Touch has a Wi-Fi receiver built in, effectively creating a Wi-Fi hotspot in the vehicle.

At the end of this year, Ford plans to roll out "App Link," a voice-control system that links apps from the user's smartphone to the car in some models. It will launch with Android and BlackBerry systems; the iPhone operating system and Windows Phone 7 will be available by the end of 2011, Hall said.

The technology will be available in 80 percent of Ford vehicles within five years, according to Hall.

But Ford is hardly alone. And it's not just car companies that are getting involved.

General Motors is promoting its own smartphone-like capabilities as part of an upgrade to its OnStar system. The improvements are designed to go after Sync, which has been a hit for Ford, especially among younger customers.

Pandora, podcasts and Wi-Fi are included. And GM officials say future versions may include the ability to update Facebook statuses and send text messages by voice control.

"Our system is first and foremost about safety and security, but we are evolving that now to include connectivity," OnStar spokesman Sam Mancusotold Wired magazine[3] last month. "Some people might say that we are behind in that space, but we are not. We were doing connected services as far back as nine, 10 years ago, but the marketplace really wasn't ready for it yet."

Microsoft and Kia Motors have teamed up to create UVO, a touchscreen and voice-enabled system that lets drivers make calls, send text messages, change radio stations and scroll their music playlists.

It features a 4.3-inch dashboard screen, about the same size as the screen on the Droid X and some other smartphones on the market.

"[The system] is a breakthrough for in-vehicle infotainment that helps allow drivers and passengers to safely and easily use all of their personal technologies to create personalized in-vehicle communications and entertainment experiences," said Michael Sprague[4], vice president of marketing for Kia.

Early this year, Pioneer unveiled[5] an enhanced stereo system that integrates maps, the Pandora music site and other apps -- plus another that allows devices such as iPods and home computers communicate.

Rader, from the highway safety group, said that with more options come more opportunities for drivers to get distracted.

"It's true that with a truly hands-free system, you're not fumbling with a device. You're not trying to dial a number," he said. "But the conversation itself appears to be a major part of the distraction. There's no indication from the research that we're making things more safe by going hands-free."

It's difficult to track the exact role smartphones play in traffic accidents, since many wrecks are caused by more than one factor. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, though, says that cell phone use[6] "whether it is a hands-free or hand-held device, degrades a driver's performance."

And a growing number of people worldwide own smartphones, which add Web surfing, apps, games and GPS-mapping to the list of diversions available to phone users in the driver's seat.

According to a Pew report[7], 38 percent of Americans accessed the internet on their phone last year -- up from 25 percent the previous year.

Hall said the new in-car systems address a simple truth. People already are driving while talking, texting and tweeting. Anything that can make that safer, he said, is a good thing.

"It really doesn't add any level of distraction to a driver that a driver can't already do," he said. "If they want to surf with a laptop in their passenger seat, they can do that in a car from 1970."

Future plans for the Sync system include the ability to surf the Web on the in-dash touchscreen, but only when the vehicle is in park.

Rader, whose group is funded by the insurance industry to help cut down on the number of car accidents, acknowledged that phone technology, even physically holding a phone in one hand and the steering wheel in the other, isn't the only reason drivers take their eyes off the road

"Distracted driving isn't new," he said. "It hasn't suddenly appeared because of all this new electronic technology. Drivers who use their phones a lot might be the kind of drivers who would be distracted by other things.

"We just keep inventing new ways to distract ourselves."

Smartphones Drive Cloud Adoption | Guest Opinions | ITBusinessEdge.com

For 2010, International Data Corporation (IDC) is now predicting total shipments of 269.6 million smartphones, compared with 173.5 million units in 2009 - growth of 55.4 percent. That's up nearly 25 percentage points from the company's 30.7 percent growth forecast released in March.

More Smartphones that Work for Business

New smartphones that are suitable for business use.

With these numbers and the rate of growth, it’s easy to see why consumers have come to expect anytime, anywhere access to the Internet, data and applications, whether they interact using their computer, mobile device, tablet or kiosk. And what makes mobile access possible? Why, the cloud, of course.

So what are the factors that have led to adoptions of these technologies?

Widespread Wi-Fi

Access to Wi-Fi is one of the driving forces that is increasing adoption of the smartphone and cloud-based technologies. Today you can access an Internet connection in any local coffee shop, bookstore, or restaurant you visit, making it easy to surf the Web, complete online transactions, update your Facebook and more. It’s only natural that a more personal, mobile device would be needed to access these Wi-Fi networks quickly and easily.

Rise of the Mobile Operating System

Users have moved beyond simple feature phones and on to smartphones in large part because of the development of advanced mobile operating systems. No longer do you have to scroll through endless black and white text menu options to complete tasks. Now advanced visual experience, easier navigation and touch screens lead the way to sophisticated mobile operating systems, making them easier to use and in turn easier for the masses to adopt.

Open Source Applications

Open source application development has also paved the way for increased smartphone and cloud technology adoption. With barriers to mobile OS application development being broken down, developers are free to capitalize on mobile Internet technology, creating applications for the smartphone customer that make their day-to-day life easier. Applications like GPS, restaurant locators, personal finance tools, and more combine the use of the Internet with the personalization of the smartphone features.

Decreased Cost of the Smartphone

In 2007, Apple introduced its own version of the smartphone, the iPhone, retailing for $500 for the cheapest version. While smartphones are far from cheap today, the cost has come down, with costs hovering around $200 to $300, making adoption of these devices and the cloud technology they utilize more common.

As the adoption of the smartphone and cloud-based technologies increases, developers of each technology are sure to find more and more uses that will become functional in consumers' everyday lives. For now, the convenience these technologies offer makes you wonder how you ever got along without them in the past.

AT&T: Early upgrade fees for smartphones raised – Product Reviews

AT&T: Early upgrade fees for smartphones raised

AT&T customers, who decide they want a new smartphone while their contract is still running, will have to pay a lot more to do so now. This will be on top of a new 24 month contract price.[1]

Christina Warren of Mashable[2] is reporting that the early upgrade fee has gone up from $75 to $200. This is when you upgrade before 18 months in a 24 month contract. An AT&T internal document stated the new pricing policy was due to the rising prices of smartphones. The new policy does not affect the iPhone.

The network provider used the BlackBerry Torch[3] as an example, as this costs $199.99 with a 24 month contract, and is now $399.99 if you want to upgrade early. Buying the device contract free is $499.99 so customers save $100, but have to extend their contract to do so.

Customers who lose their phone or have their device break down are probably the ones to be affected the most by this new policy, as a lot of people should be fine keeping the same device for 18 months.

TV industry show hails smartphone, Facebook era

By Audrey Stuart (AFP) – 11 hours ago

PARIS — Internet-based TV viewing, the arrival of Apple's iPad and the proliferation of smartphones are set to ring in a new era of connected entertainment, industry experts predict.

Thousands of TV execs are to flock to the French Riviera to brainstorm and snap up some of the hottest new programmes at this year's influential MIPCOM 2010 audiovisual entertainment show that kicks off here Monday.

The four-day event will focus on re-defining the entertainment experience through fast-growing digital platforms such as social networks as well as smartphone-connected digital TV and apps and their effect on the industry.

"The business model for the web has not yet emerged even while the business model on TV is shifting dramatically," Gary Carter, chief operating officer at international production company FreemantleMedia told AFP.

"The two big areas of exploration for FreemantleMedia in the last 12 months have been the use of our brands in social games and on social networks," Carter noted.

Games such as FarmVille or Bejeweled, both of which are available as apps on Facebook and Apple's iPhone, are spreading like wildfire, Carter added.

Digital technologies are expected to steadily increase their impact on all segments of entertainment and media.

The number of apps on offer to iPhone, iPad and smartphone users is exploding and promises to usher in a new era for the media sector.

In 2010, almost 6.0 billion paid-for and free apps are predicted to be downloaded, up from around 2.4 billion in 2009. This surge in sales could yield over 11 billion dollars in revenue by 2014 in the US alone.

The bottom line here is how the entertainment, digital and advertising sectors can work together to create much-needed new revenue streams.

With advertising revenues increasingly migrating to the Internet, a large number of Internet-based companies are expected to attend.

These include heavyweight Microsoft's MSN as well as hugely-popular video-sharing website YouTube and social networking sites Facebook and Bebo.

Television nevertheless remains as popular as ever, via terrestrial, cable and satellite channels or via the Internet.

"Over a five-year period television, globally, will continue to hold its share of global advertising," Marcel Fenez from influential market watchers PricewaterhouseCoopers told MIPCOM News.

Media specialists Eurodata TV Worldwide reported recently that whilst 2009 was a record year in terms of worldwide viewing time, 2010 looks set to be even better.

"In 2010 the worldwide consumption of television continued to grow strongly, mostly due to the many sports events that year, but also because of the cross-fertilization between TV and the Internet," noted Eurodata TV Worldwide vice president, Jacques Braun.

This year will be a star-studded event with a host of A-list TV stars and top entertainment industry honchos due in town as the entertainment industry bounces back after a tough few years.

Hollywood legend Robert Redford will jet in to mark the first anniversary of the launch of the Sundance Channel in Europe.

Three of the stars of America's multiple-Emmy award winning drama series "Mad Men" -- Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss and John Slattery -- will also be here for the first MIPCOM World Premiere TV Screenings.

And the cast of hotly-tipped new series, The Waking Dead, will invade the famed Cannes Croisette to promote the show.

Report: Facebook, INQ Prep Smartphone – VON

From google news feed on September 22, 2010
Categories: Smartphone news

Bolstering reports of a “Facebook phone," Bloomberg News reported[1] that “Facebook Inc.[2] is working with mobile-handset manufacturer INQ Mobile Ltd.[3] on two smartphones that may be carried by AT&T Inc.[4], according to three people familiar with the matter."

The project as reported by Bloomberg, however, appears to be in line with earlier statements from Facebook – which has acknowledged that it seeks to more deeply integrate its application on mobile devices – rather than a Facebook phone created, marketed, or sold by the social-media giant.

“We’ve been working with INQ for a couple of years now to help them build a deeply integrated Facebook experience on their devices," the company told Bloomberg in an e-mailed statement.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg – who just announced he is donating $100 million to the school system in Newark, New Jersey – reiterated in an interview with TechCrunch[5], which first reported earlier this week that a Facebook-branded phone is in the works – that his company has no intention of entering the fiercely competitive mobile-device market.

“At the end of the day, when people say ‘building a phone’ they actually can mean very different things," Zuckerberg. “Internally, the way we talk about our strategy, it’s like the opposite of that. Our whole strategy is not to build any specific device or integration or anything like that. Because we’re not trying to compete with Apple or the Droid or any other hardware manufacturer for that matter."

The devices made by London-based INQ, which is backed by Hong Kong carrier Hutchison Whampoa Ltd., could go on sale in the spring of 2011 and could reach the U.S. by July of 2011. No carrier has signed on to market the phones, though the Bloomberg report said that AT&T will “probably" be the primary carrier.
